Small, family farm on 20 acres in Washburn, Wis.
Will o the Winds Farm sits on 20 beautiful acres in northern Wisconsin, just over an hour east of Duluth, Minn. We bought our land in spring 2019 and spent the first year building our home and setting up our first pasture for raising pigs. We decided to move back to the Chequamegon Bay region as we really love the community here and Lake Superior is one of our favorite places in the world. We are not new to farming as we previously lived in Emerald, Wis. and farmed for five years there.
Our initial inspiration for buying a farm was to grow and provide good and healthy food for our friends and family. We enjoyed it so much the first year that we made the decision to create the farm business and increase our production so that other families could enjoy the same nutritious food. We strive to promote the importance of locally grown and raised food.
To help us make our farm sustainable long-term, we enrolled in the winter 2015-16 Farm Beginnings program provided by the Land Stewardship Project. This program taught us about how to successfully incorporate enterprise budgeting and financial management for the business, along with giving us the support and push to continue growing and making the dream of farming a reality.
The name of Will o the Winds Farm was inspired from Tyler's grandparents' hobby farm name. Originally in Excelsior, Minn., the hobby farm was home to a large variety of animals and gardens. Their passion and love of animals, along with Tyler's mother's, was passed onto Tyler and now Gwendolyn and Vera.
This love for animals was one of the main reasons we decided to pursue livestock as our primary farming enterprises. Chickens have been a great beginning learning experience as they are pretty easy to raise organically and on pasture. As we continue to expand the farm, we chose to raise pigs as they are intelligent, playful and fun animals to interact with.
